social networking baggage

I remember when I first opened an account on facebook. I was apprehensive about it at first because I felt like people had access to my personal information. This is one of the reasons why myspace was not an option. Anyone in the world would be able to access my myspace page and check out my information. Facebook, on the other hand was limited to college students only... then to high school students... then college grads... then everyone! The one thing that was appealing to facebook initially has been changed. However, there still are privacy options that you can tinker with.

Last Thursday, my Multimedia and the World Wide Web teacher informed us that our identity can be stolen from little things such as our birth date. I have since removed my birthday from the site, and am contemplating closing my account. Is having a facebook account worth the risk of identity theft?

Social networks just might not be my thing.

John, I also deleted my facebook account after facebook started to get out of control with all these many crazy features and people could track your every move within the network. This is no surprise thought that facebook moved into this direction. If you look at other techonological advances recently you would notice that they seem to be based on this concept of supervisoin. For example there is some cell phone company which of course I can not recall that allows you to see where a person is calling from; their location. The spaces of puclic and private are becoming very blurred very quickly and I think I may extend this convo to my page as a blog. Anyway, Like you said the one thing that I liked about Facebook was its select demographic community and now they have changed that and any one can log on and have an account. This was just too much for me and its the reason why I never had a myspace account. Plus, I intend on going to my highschool reunion as lame as it may sound and I felt that networks like these ruined such social gatherings like that(you know the element of surprise). But on the other hand maybe not, seeing as how being in person is way different than sitting behing a computer desk. I guess the good thing about facebook is being able to keep in touch with those close frineds that all went off to different high schools around the world and I do not exaggerate when I say the world. Facebook and other social networks are just not for everybody.
